Soften Your Room With Sheers

Hi Guys,

If you're a fan of old movies where the windows of the mansion are open and the billowy curtains are blowing into the room as the heroine strolls by, then this is the tip for you.

You can get that exact same effect by using sheers on your windows. Choose white or ivory sheers and hang them outside the window trim and as high as possible. Hanging them high will make your ceiling seem higher. If, on the other hand, you like the look of puddled curtains on the floor, hang them at the top of the window trim. Choose a decorative curtain rod that ties in with the rest of the room's decor. Sheers will also work with blinds if you need to control the light.

I chose white sheers with sheer scarves for my living room and just sheers for my dining room.

That's my tip for today.

Favorite Colors

Hi Guys,

We had company from Iowa visit us this weekend. We took them sightseeing through Lexington and Concord and finished the evening with a wonderful, home cooked lobster dinner which we ate out on our deck. The weather was perfect and so was the company.

My decorating tip for today will give you a little insight into how decorators work. Most decorators have one or two go-to colors. These colors have worked for them in almost all their decorating situations. A friend of mine always uses Benjamin Moore's November Skies, a beautiful lavender.

My go-to colors, besides Benjamin Moore's Super White for the trim, both inside and outside the house, are BM Navajo White. It is very neutral with a slight yellow undertone. It can be used for walls or trim if you don't like the starkness of Super White. Another neutral is China White. It is more white than Navajo White with a grayish undertone and can be used as a wall color or as a trim color. Another favorite is BM Northern Air. I love this color of blue. I use it in bedrooms, living rooms, and it's even on the ceiling of my front porch. While redoing a kitchen last year, I discovered BM Summer Harvest. It is a lovely yellow, not bright, sort of soft and golden. It soon became one of my favorites. If I want to go for something dramatic, I always go to BM Frozen in Time. It is the most beautiful brownish purple. It is the color I used under the chair rail in the dining room in my previous tip (by the way, Navajo White is above the chair rail), and in the kitchen above the window.

Those are my absolute favorites. Some of the other colors I used in my home are BM Spring Valley which is a lovely, soft green with yellow undertones; Colonial Blue (a medium grayish blue), which I used as the accent wall in the family room where the other three walls are painted Valley Green and ties in with the living room which is painted Northern Air. My sewing/craft room is a real girly-girl room painted Lavender Mist (a pale lavender with blue undertones). I used Tucson Red (a dark red with a hint of orange) on the accent wall in the master bedroom. The rest of the room is painted in BM Blond Wood (beige with red undertones, but doesn't look at all pink). I used China White in both upstairs bathrooms. The outside of our house is painted Fun in the Sun Yellow with Bittersweet Chocolate shutters, and, of course, Super White trim.

That's my tip for today,

Accentuate the Architectural Features of Your Home

Hi Guys,

Accentuate the architectural details of your home such as crown moldings, chair railings, tray ceilings, niches, etc., by painting them a lighter or darker color than your walls. Even the trim around your windows and doors can be set apart by painting them a different color than your walls.

When we moved into this house, a 1968 ranch, the only architectural details were a chair rail in the dining room and trim around the doors and windows. We had just left a beautiful brick front colonial with crown moldings in every room, a chair rail in the dining room and kitchen, a fireplace with a gorgeous mantle, and beautiful pendants hanging outside above the front door. That being said, we decided to accentuate what we had at our new house by painting all the trim Benjamin Moore's Super White to make it really stand out. We painted all the trim the same color so my husband wouldn't have to ask me what color trim goes in which room. No, actually by keeping the trim consistent it made for a better flow between rooms. I'm very happy with the bright white color, and when clients ask what color to use on the trim, I always tell them Super White.

I've included some pictures so you can see how the bright white really makes the features pop.

That's my tip for today.

Pamper Yourself with Fresh Flowers

Hi Guys,

Wouldn't it be nice to come home to a bouquet of fresh cut flowers? Well, you can have the next best thing.  Go to a store like Michaels, TJMaxx, Home Goods, Marshalls, The Dollar Store, or any store that sells inexpensive, but beautiful, bud vases. Buy several to spread around the house.

The next time you are grocery shopping, stop by the cut flowers and buy a bouquet. Seasonal flowers are less expensive than roses and usually last longer. When you get home cut apart the bouquet into individual flowers and put one or two into each bud vase. Put a vase where you are sure to see it...by your computer, your TV, your sinks, your bedside table, your dining table, your kitchen counter, and be sure to place one or a group of three somewhere so you will immediately see them when you walk in the door after a hard day at work.

Be sure to add fresh water often and change the flower every week or two. Mums are in season right now and come in a variety of colors.

That's my tip for today.

How to Display Collectables

Hi Guys,

When displaying collectables, group similar items together in uneven numbers (3, 5, 7). This is more pleasing to the eye.

Items should be grouped together according to subject matter (birds, animals, boxes of all shapes, hearts, small vases, etc.) or color (blue crystal items, clear crystal bells, silver candle sticks, etc.).

When you are displaying small photographs, choose a sofa table, piano, or book shelf and display them only in one area of the room. Put similar frames and sizes of photographs together. Separate colored and black and white photographs. Put all colored photographs together and black and white photographs together.

Do not display more than two or three small groups in a room. Put the others away and switch them out every few months. This will keep your room new to you and your family and friends and will keep it from looking cluttered.

That's my tip for today.

Make a Small Room Look Larger

If you have a small room that you want to look larger, paint the ceiling the color of the walls. That way the room doesn't have a cut off point. It just keeps going up and up.

Don't be afraid to use a dark color in a small room. It creates drama and makes the room cozy and warm.

That's my tip for today.

Put Some Pizzazz in Your Bedroom

Hi Guys,

Put some pizzazz in your bedroom by adding some funky colored sheets to your bed. Go to the clearance bin at your local Bed Bath and Beyond and find a bright color like chartreuse, hot pink, teal, bright purple, bright red, or sunshine yellow. Be sure to wash the sheets at least once before you put them on your bed. Keep the pillow cases neutral to hide the surprise.

At night when you throw back the comforter, you will see a wonderful sea of color and will slip into a fun, joyful place to rest your weary bones.

Be sure to change colors often to keep the surprise fresh.

That's my tip for today.

Add A Splash of Color

Hi Guys,

If you are tired of looking at four drab walls, but don't have the inclination to paint them all, just paint one. Take a look around your room. What is your predominant color (not counting the walls). Let's say your walls are light green but you have a lot of blue in your furniture, carpet, pillows, paintings, etc. Paint the most prominent wall a medium to dark blue. It will really brighten up the room and bring out all the blues you already have in the room.

If you have a light yellow room, and have a lot of red or orange accents, you know what to do...paint your accent wall a beautiful terracotta.

That's my tip for today. Happy painting everyone!
